LABI Nigeria is a well-established humanitarian actor within Nigeria and has unique expertise in various thematic areas such as Case Management, Child Protection, Women's Empowerment, Gender-based Violence (GBV), Nutrition and Education in emergency situations. The main objective of LABI Nigeria is to offer comprehensive preventive and reactive interventions by working closely with children, women, families and communities. LABI Nigeria's key programs include a community-based child protection mechanism, family care for unaccompanied children, psychosocial support offered through individual case management, child-friendly space
s and parenting skills programs. In addition, LABI Nigeria is involved in the release and reintegration of women and children associated with armed groups, as well as in the prevention of child labor through life skills training, recreational activities and the provision of food and non-food items (ANI). LABI adopts a reintegration approach that combines child protection, prevention and treatment of GBV in emergency contexts, thus promoting a complementary and collaborative approach.

Nutrition Officer

Location: MMC, Jere and Kwaya-Kusar LGAs of Borno Potiskum LGA of Yobe State Northeast Nigeria.
Contract Duration – 12 months (with possible extension).

General Objective

Under the direct supervision of the nutrition advisor, the nutrition officer will help organize and conduct nutrition education/awareness and community screening activities at the community level.

The nutrition officer will be responsible for ensuring that the educational messages are transmitted to the beneficiaries in accordance with the objectives set and with the highest quality in terms of accuracy, effectiveness and cultural sensitivity in order to optimize the adoption of healthier behaviors among mothers of children under five years of age.

Responsibilities and Tasks

• Implementation and monitoring of nutrition activities :
• Responsible for the day-to-day management of nutrition activities at the outpatient patient treatment program (OTP) or at IYCF project sites, in accordance with standardized protocols, policies and guidelines defined by the Federal Ministry of Health of Nigeria (FMOH) and/or global nutrition standards.
• Participate in the identification of eligible beneficiaries of the project and key people in the community, including community nutrition mobilizers and responsible mothers, according to the missions.
• Participate in the organization of project beneficiaries and volunteers in groups and other forums for the dissemination of nutrition messages.
• In collaboration with the CMAM or IYCF supervisors, participate in the planning and implementation of trainings for beneficiaries, volunteers and key people in the community.
• Participate in the planning and execution of community/household surveys or assessments as needed.
• Ensure the search for absentees or defaulters among the beneficiaries of the OTP and other forms of monitoring at community level.
• Ensure the appropriate and constant dissemination of educational messages/Communication for Behavior Change (BCC) to mothers and other caregivers on the OTP or IYCF project sites.
• In liaison with the supervisor, disseminate all relevant information, education and communication materials (IEC) as well as reporting tools to responsible mothers, volunteers or staff of the health facility, as needed.
• Implement outpatient nutritional treatment for severely malnourished children under the age of five and community awareness activities integrated into IYCF activities in accordance with the stipulated protocols. Train and supervise the Nutrition project staff and community nutrition mobilizers (CNM), identify skills gaps and conduct refreshment and field training.
• Disseminate the key messages on nutrition to the targeted beneficiaries, ensuring that they are well understood.
• Participate in monitoring activities, including brachial circumference screening in children under five years of age and pregnant or lactating women depending on the needs of the project.
• Strengthen close collaboration with the health, food security and livelihood sectors, as well as protection at the project level.
• Promote positive collaboration between LABDI and local community leaders.
• Act as a link with the local population and the authorities to identify needs, concerns and major events that may have potential consequences on LABDI's activities.
• Contribute to ensuring that the beneficiaries of the OTP or the IYCF and the local populations understand the objectives of the project and actively participate in their implementation.

Communication and Reports :

• Transmit any information or problem to his/her direct and/or indirect supervisor concerning his/her tasks, LABDI's programs or safety-related aspects.
• Deal with questions in the field with beneficiaries or community members and inform the supervisor.
• Represent LABDI at all times and in all places when he/she is on duty.
• Collect and compile field data, photos and information to develop accurate weekly internal reports for the supervisor.
• Present the weekly achievements, the problems encountered and the suggestions to improve the implementation of the project.
• Contribute to strengthening the feedback and complaints system of the LABDI community.
• Keep the monitoring tools and archived files at the LABDI office, ensuring that they are available for his/her supervisor.

Logistics and Administration :

• Contribute to the logistical and administrative organization of activities related to the Nutrition Program.
• Contribute to defining the needs for materials and tools concerning the program and the planning of interventions.
• Ensure the safety and good condition of the nutrition equipment provided by LABDI.

Requirements

Essential Criteria :

• Language proficiency: proficiency in English (speaking, reading and writing), Fluent in local languages - Hausa, Kanuri and Bura, etc.
• Academic background: Degree in Nutrition or a related health discipline
• Professional experience: Proven experience in nutrition within NGOs.
