Chelimo Njoroge Donates 180 Liters of Breast Milk – Kenya Urged to Establish Breast Milk Banks"

In a touching humanitarian gesture that embodies the compassion and giving of motherhood,  Chelimo Njoroge a Kenyan mother of two, caught the country's attention after doing the noble act of donating excessive amounts of her breast milk to save the lives of premature babies and patients of neonatal intensive care units in several Kenyan hospitals.

After the birth of her second child early this year, shelmo discovered that she was producing large amounts of milk beyond her baby's need  up to 700 ml per suction session compared to only 40 ml at the beginning. With more than 180 liters of milk piled up in her freezer, she decided to turn this surplus into a message of life and hope for children in need.

on her statement  "I had a lot of milk and it was going to be wasted, while there are children struggling to survive... I could not stand still,"* shelmo said in an informational interview.

What started as a simple help to the child of her close friend, soon turned into a broad humanitarian campaign. After posting a video on social media asking for an official direction to donate, in just one hour she received more than 25 urgent requests mostly from parents of premature babies in intensive care units.

In a touching situation,  Chelimo Njoroge denote 10 liters of milk to a single father in Kiambu County who was caring for premature twins after the mother abandoned him. She also taught him how to store milk safely and in a healthy way.

Call for the establishment of breast milk banks in Kenya

Chelimo Njoroge story also sparked a national debate about the absence of breast milk banks in Kenya, unlike countries like South Africa and the United States, where there are formal and safe systems for screening and storing donated milk.

The pediatrician has expressed  Dr. Brian Lisu  expressed his support for Chelimo Njoroge efforts, stressing that donated breast milk is a real lifesaver for premature babies:

Chelimo Njoroge is now seeking to  advocate for the establishment of official milk banks in Kenya, to provide safe milk to children in need and reduce dependence on milk
