The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the categories of the election staff that will be engaged during the January 2027 election activities.

As such, individuals who are interested in working with INEC to facilitate the upcoming election should consider their current position to identify the category they can fit in.

INEC has different categories for public and civil servants, school staff or students, corps members, former corps members and people with an Information Technology (IT) background.

It is important to study the requirements for each category before starting the registration process.

Failing to meet the requirements for a selected category will impede one's application process with INEC.

In this piece, we will discuss the categories of INEC election staff and their eligibility requirements in layman's terms.

INEC January 2027 Election Staff Positions

The following positions are available at the moment:

  • Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO)
  • Registration Area Center (RAC) Manager
  • Presiding Officer (PO)
  • Assistant Presiding Officer (APO)
  • Registration Area Technical Support (RATECH)


Each of the categories has different requirements. As such, individuals should select the category which fits their current status.


1. Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO)

The Supervisory Presiding Officer (SPO) falls into one of the categories available to the people who wish to work with INEC.

Who can apply for SPO?

  • To apply for the Supervisory Presiding Officer position, the applicant must possess the required condition.
  • The applicant must be a Public or Civil Servant on Grade Level 10 to 14.
  • Registration Area Officers or INEC staff on Grade Level 10 to 14 who are not engaged in other duties may also apply.
  • Therefore, applicants who fall under this category should take note of the required grade level before indicating the SPO position during registration.

If an individual does not qualify for the Supervisory Presiding Officer category, he/she should look through the other available positions to see whether he/she qualifies.


2. Registration Area Center (RAC) Manager

Another position available in the INEC election staff recruitment is the Registration Area Center Manager, known as RAC Manager.

The RAC Manager is associated with the location where election materials and activities may be handled during the election period.

RAC Manager Requirements

To apply for the RAC Manager position, you must meet one of the requirements below:


  • You must be a Head of School.
  • You must be a staff member on Grade Level 07 and above of the school, institution or public building hosting the Registration Area Center.
  • This implies that the applicant must be associated with the school, institution or public building that will host the RAC.
  • Applicants should take note of their status and the requirements before indicating this category during registration.


3. Presiding Officer (PO) / Assistant Presiding Officer (APO)

The Presiding Officer (PO) and Assistant Presiding Officer (APO) categories are also available for eligible applicants.

There are different groups of people that may qualify for the PO and APO positions.

Who can apply as PO or APO?

  • You may qualify as a prospective PO/APO if you fall under any of the following categories:
  • Serving Corps Member
  • A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member can apply for the PO or APO position.
  • If you are a serving corps member and qualify for the position according to the other conditions provided by INEC, you may select the PO/APO category during registration.
  • Penultimate Student

A penultimate student of a Federal or State tertiary institution in Nigeria may also apply.

  • The student must possess knowledge of Information Technology (IT).
  • A penultimate student generally refers to a student who is on the second year of his/her course of study.
  • Students who want to apply should take note of their school and level of study to ensure that it meets the requirements before registration.
  • Permanent Staff of an MDA: A permanent staff member of a Ministry, Department or Agency (MDA) may also apply for a PO/APO position.
  • The applicant must possess an OND qualification or be on Grade Level 07 to 10.
  • Applicants in this category should take note of their employment status and qualification to ensure that it meets the stated requirements.
  • Permanent INEC Staff: Permanent INEC staff on Grade Level 07 and 08 may also apply under the PO/APO category
  • Applicants should select the appropriate category based on their current status.
  • Former Corps Members
  • Former corps members from 2024 may also apply for the PO/APO position.
  • If you were a corps member in 2024, you may fall under this category, subject to the other requirements and instructions given by INEC.

4. Registration Area Technical Support (RATECH)

  • Registration Area Technical Support, known as RATECH, is another category available for people with an IT background.
  • The position is related to technical and ICT support during election activities.
  • RATECH Requirements
  • Applicants for RATECH category must possess an IT background.
  • The requirements also state that applicants must be suitable INEC ICT staff from the State or Headquarters of the Commission who are not engaged in any other duties.
  • If you are interested in this category, you should take note of whether your background and current position meet the requirements before applying.


Other Important Requirements for INEC Applicants

  • Apart from the requirements mentioned in each category, applicants should also keep note of some general conditions.
  • Applicants Must Not Be Members of a Political Party
  • Applicants must not be members of a political party.
  • This is an important requirement for people who wish to participate as election staff.
  • Before applying, make sure that you meet this condition.
  • Applicants Must Not Support a Candidate or Party
  • Applicants must not have demonstrated or expressed support for any candidate or political party.
  • This means that applicants should not have demonstrated or expressed support for a candidate or political party in a manner that goes against the conditions for election staff.
  • Applicants Must Reside in the Selected State
  • Applicants are expected to reside in the State they select during registration.

  • Review the requirements for the available positions.
  • You will be expected to go through the requirements for all available Election staff positions to determine your Eligibility
  • 2. Click on ”Register” and follow the instructions.
  • 3. Create your Password
  • After creating your password, you are automatically logged into the portal and presented with an application form
  • 4. Fill the Application form.
  • Note: This form has three sections to it: Personal Information, Contact Information, and Bank Details. Kindly put in your name as it appears on your BVN and make sure details are correct before submission as it cannot be changed afterwards.
  • 5. Upload your passport photograph.
  • You are required to upload a recent passport photograph (plain background), size not more than 5MB.
  • 6. Fill in the details of your referees
  • 7. Check the Attestation box
  • The information provided, will be validated from your institutions/organization/referees
  • 8. Submit the application
  • 9. Print your acknowledgement slip.
  • This is mandatory as you will need this for the final verification.
